Description:
Penn Faculty and Staff Against the War on Iraq is hosting a
Teach-In to encourage critical debate on this vital subject. We believe and
millions worldwide concur -- that the war on Iraq was unprovoked, unnecessary,
unjustified, and unwise. We believe it violated international law and that the
primary justifications for the war were without foundation. Prosecuting this
war has resulted in massive losses of Iraqi and American lives and has
undermined the moral credibility of the United States. As educators, we are
deeply troubled by the distorted coverage of American military actions and
policies in Iraq. This most secretive of U.S. administrations — aided and
abetted by a largely compliant media — has ignored, trivialized, and demonized
dissent. We organized our first Iraq War Teach-In in 2002. Now, as we head
towards vital mid-term elections, we present another. We urge you to join us,
to hear what our distinguished panelists have to say, and to engage in
precisely the kinds of critical thinking (and writing!) that our current
political leaders discourage.
The Teach-In will address three critical questions.
1. "How Did We Get Into a Prolonged War in Iraq?" (Tues 19th)
2. "How is Occupation Impacting the US and Iraq?" (Wed 20th)
3. "How Can Concerned Citizens Respond?" (Thurs 21st)
Each evening we will present a two-hour panel discussion followed by a film at
8pm The films are:
Why We Fight (2005) (Tues 19th, 8pm)
The Dreams of Sparrows (2005) (Wed 20th, 8pm)
Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War (2003) (Thurs 21st, 8pm)
*All the events are free and open to all. Members of the public will need to
show ID and be signed in at the front desk if they arrive after 7pm.
